Design

Designing a product and developing a way to make it has been part of Multiform Products right from the beginning. The way we take that design from paper to prototype has certainly changed over the years, but the innovative thinking that is needed has not. Working alongside our customer, we take ideas and sketches and add our input to provide the best solution for their needs.

Once we have a concept or two, we use SolidWorks to take those ideas and turn them into a 3D model of the design, giving the customer the best way to visualise their product. Multiform can take your project from an idea, produce a prototype and then manufacture it.

What do I need to think about when designing a product?

It seems obvious to say that a good product begins with good design. However, design has a bearing not only on the aesthetics and function of your product—it also affects the way it is manufactured. The design will alter the process used and even the number of operations involved. The bottom line is that the design does indeed affect the bottom line—in this case the cost of your product.

So consider all three aspects in your design. Certainly think about the aesthetics and function, but take into consideration the manufacturing aspect also. Doing so will result in a more cost-effective product.

I don't have SolidWorks. How can I view a 3D model?

Use the free eDrawings Viewer to view, rotate, and print models. Alternatively, we can supply a 3D PDF that opens in the latest Adobe Reader for interactive viewing and printing.

Already have a design in another package?

SolidWorks can import many formats, including:

• DXF, DWG, Parasolid, STEP, ACIS, IGES
• VRML (.wrl), STL (.stl), CATIA Graphics (.cgr)
• Pro/E (.prt/.asm), Unigraphics (.prt), IFC
• Inventor (.ipt/.iam), Solid Edge (.psm/.asm), Rhino (.3dm)
• Plus others (Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop, CADKEY, IDF, etc.)

While most can be opened, some work better than others — we’ll advise the best path for clean translation.

Machining

Our machining division is equipped for precision small parts through to large, complex components. With CNC turning, 4-axis milling, and careful process control, we achieve tight tolerances and consistent finishes.

CNC Turning

• Bar fed: Ø5–Ø65 mm, up to ~500 mm long (part-dependent)
• From billet: up to Ø250 × 250 mm
• Hand-loaded parts: down to Ø2 mm

4-Axis Machining Centre

• Main bed: 600 × 450 mm
• Rotary table: Ø300 × 500 mm

Cost-Effective Design Tips

• Loosen tolerances where function allows
• Relax surface finish requirements if possible
• Simplify features and ops; design to “fall-off finished”
• Consider alternative materials for cost/performance

Fabrication

MIG and TIG welding, a 160-tonne CNC press brake (standard and custom tooling), rollers, and specialist forming equipment — backed by in-house jigs/fixtures for repeatable quality and fast turnaround.

Our tooling integrates seamlessly with laser-cut profiles to keep tolerances tight and assembly efficient.

Laser Profiling & Tube Cutting

Flat-Bed Fiber Laser

3 kW with a 3000 × 1500 mm bed — mild steel, stainless, aluminium, and copper.

Tube Lasers

Two fiber tube systems cutting approx. Ø12–Ø350 mm (larger by request) for fast, consistent results.

Nitrogen Generation

On-site nitrogen provides clean edges and helps keep costs competitive.

Cost-Saving Tips

• Minimise pierces (e.g., link holes, slot to the edge)
• Use thinner material where strength allows
• Design for easier downstream ops (bending/welding/finishing)

Electro-Polishing

Capacity up to 600 × 700 × 2400 mm. The process refines stainless surfaces, enhances passivation, and improves cleanability by levelling microscopic peaks and troughs. It also reaches internal/complex areas and can deburr small edges.

• Superior passivation (iron removed, chromium/nickel enriched)
• Smoother, brighter finish; easier cleaning
• Access to internal geometries, small burr removal

On-Site Assembly & Installation

Field assembly by the team that built it — ensuring correct fit, alignment, and a safe, efficient install. We handle mechanical assemblies, stainless process equipment, laser-cut/machined components, and custom systems.

Project Consultation

From feasibility to production planning, we align design, materials, and processes early — reducing rework and cost. Includes material/process selection, timeline planning, integration with fabrication/install, and cost optimisation.

Accuracy, repeatability, and quality are our baseline. We identify critical tolerances, material choices, and processes early, then verify through inspection from CAD to final part.

Quality Assurance
